SUPERVISION FOR PROFESSIONAL COACHES – COACHING FOR THE COACH

SCOA provides supervision for professional coaches who are in private practice or working within their own organizations.  Our experience as coaches and trainers in the Master Program reinforces our belief that expert coaches benefit from ongoing development. We also believe that supervision - or “coaching for the coach” – is an essential element of ongoing development.

SCOA combines three elements to tailor its process to supervise professional coaches: assessment and specific planning with a client, supervisory meetings in facilitated peer groups, and supervision in individual meetings.

SCOA uses two models to organize the supervision activity:

 - MODEL 1: Practitioner support

This supervision model is for individuals who have completed SCOA training (or an equivalent training experience) and are in the beginning phase of practice as professional coaches.   Model 1 is based on meetings in peer groups of coaches. These sessions are intended to meet the needs of new coaches in such areas as handling specific client challenges.

- MODEL 2: Professional improvement

This supervision model is intended for experienced coaches who want to improve their professional skills in supporting client change processes and be updated with new developments and best practices of coaching.

Both models will start with a planning meeting to determine goals, timing and contents of the process.

THE ORGANIZATION OF THE SUPERVISION ACTIVITY

COACHING COMPETENCIES

The SCOA model for coaching competencies has been developed in collaboration with Trevor Boutall, a leading expert in the design, management and certification of managerial and professional competencies. His approaches are widely used in the  United Kingdom and his standards have been adopted by hundreds of thousands of people and companies. Mr. Boutall’s work is highly regarded in the industry for its reliability as a method for supervisory development and support for certification.

Collaborating with Mr. Boutall, the SCOA team has:

  • analysed the Coaching process, dividing it into phases
  • identified the competencies necessary in each step to effectively apply the Coaching process
  • designed a method of supervision that strengthens these competencies.

The competencies identified comply with the ethical and professional standards set by the International Coaching Federation (ICF).

THE OPENING ASSESSMENT
The individual or group assessment lasts one day and consists of interactive simulations followed by a process of structured self-assessment, concluding in an interview to set a shared evaluation of the current professional profile of the individual. This option helps the individual client (or professional peer group) and the SCOA Supervisor set goals for improvement.

THE DESIGNING OF A SPECIFIC PATH
Both the participating coach and the SCOA Supervisor collaborate to design a tailored approach to the supervision experience that will meet the targets and provide the specific support required for improvements.

SUPERVISION IN GROUPS
The SCOA Supervisor leads focused meetings in which participants discuss their experiences and challenges in actual coaching cases and work toward developing solutions for individual goals and results.

INDIVIDUAL SUPERVISION
The participant and the SCOA Supervisor explore such factors as the participant’s impasses, the dynamics she/he faces within their organizations. All participants are challenged to develop creative solutions.

All individual supervision is conducted in private, confidential coaching sessions with the SCOA Supervisor.
